What the hell were you thinking!
News that office workers are spending an average of £1,000 per year on sandwiches for lunch has come as a depressing shock, mainly because much of it is at Boots. And its not like we’re novices here, we've been eating them since the 1750s so we should know better.
But don’t dust off the Breville just yet. here’s a lostincatering list to liven up your shopping and don’t let the madame-tussaudian queues put you off. This weeks three new openings are first up..
1.Amid a flurry of PR, the Earl of Sandwich (Subway meets Pret) has landed in the UK this week so it’s only a matter of time before Panera Bread follows. First site is on Ludgate Hill, City. From £3.95 hot, freshly made to order sandwiches, Get ready for a roll-out because its backed by Robert Earl (Hard rock/Planet H etc).
2.Kua'Aina, the Hawaiian burger and sandwich chain is debuting just off Carnaby Street near the Barbour shop. Hot sandwiches, plenty of chargrill and good coffee
3.MD’s has arrived in Covent Garden next to Les Deux Salons on William IV Street. Pintxos style priced from a £1. Think Barcelona without the cool, still worth a look.
4.Mooli’s on Frith Street, Soho would like to remind you that they ‘don’t sell fu£&ing burrito’s’. Kind of tokyo meets delhi wraps, great flavours, goat is best and its worth the trip.
5.King of burrito, daddydonkey on leather lane, EC1 is the current cream of the crop. The big daddy-d is where its at.. a MAN-WICH!
6.Hoxton Beach- London’s king of falafel on Whitecross St - def the best this side of Tel Aviv
7.Banh Mi Bay on Theobalds Rd (Chancery Lane) holds the current best banh-mi with a variety of chargrilled meats being stuffed into sandwiches washed down w the usual pickles and spice.
8.We need to add sliders onto this. So the champs are definitely white-hot Spuntino with the beef and the salt-beef and lesser known but arguably better Opera Tavern who feature the beef and bonemarrow.
9.Old favourite Brindisa (the stall in Borough Mkt) where people happily wait half an hour to get their hands around a chorizo and piquillo pepper roll.
10. Bring on the bocadillo’s at Soho stalwart Fernadez & Wells.. nuff said.
There’s just one thing missing now.. the double decker! Suggestions gratefully accepted.
And for info..
Looking for flavour ideas.. check out wichcraft legends from New York now in SF and Vegas.
Pret is rolling out in Chicago - why not!
Subway’s cutting salt by 15%.. but its still salty.
