RECOMMENDED VIEWING

These days, those that know have re-imagined this classic as Pork Crackling. Perhaps because ‘scratchings’ introduces the possibility of broken teeth, scorched hair, possibly even a nipple.  For now the best examples belong to Terroirs in London’s Covent Garden.  Of course, Mr Hix has a lovely salted pork crackling and at newly opened Hix Belgravia there’s a great variant.. “Reg Johnsons Quackling” served with apples sauce.

10.  Pork scratchings

There’s a lot to talk about at Marks Bar in Soho (Hix).  Recently crowned the OFM bar of the year, turns out that wasn’t for drinks alone.  Notable are the Welsh rarebit fondue, bone marrow on toast, but its the Quails Egg Shooters which take the bar snack honours.  Its as simple as it sounds, bacon on top give em a squeeze and knock it back.   And don’t forget your free twiglets.

Despite the fact that a packet of walkers and a pint normally do the trick, why not upgrade your snack!  There’ll come a point during the evening when you’ll need to supplement your cocktail quaffing.  The bacon popcorn is the bar snack highlight here, that said, when its as expensive as this it really is the least they can do!

Whilst still congratulating yourself for arriving early and beating the queue, nestle in at the bar and start the evening by plunging these miracle’s into the supplied blue cheese sauce.  Gorgeous.  And you’d better start drinking because any minute you’re gonna realise your not actually cool enough to be in here.

The French frenchify things. It’s just what they do. Worked great for toast. And maids. So why shouldn’t the English do the same.  The Compass in Islington are giving the more famous Scotch Egg a run for its money.  Their roll is enriched with black pudding with a dollop of mustard on the side.. nice.

When you’re hanging out somewhere this cool, you need an alternative potato chip to help with your over pampered ego.  The purple crisps are on the house, adding just enough class to persuade you that paying prices like these wasn’t the worst idea you’d had this week.

Turn down the lights. Find yourself a nice quiet space. A comfy carpet square, perhaps. And breathe deeply. We’re going to meditate for a moment.  Because the accolade for best Scotch Egg takes some serious contemplation.  You’ll find a world of wonderful variation in bars across the City.. chorizo egg, haggis egg, black pudding egg, you name it.  Last September The Ship in Wandsworth played host to the first Scotch Egg Challenge, The Devonshire Arms emerged victorious in a blind tasting.  But for L.I.C its the Fox & Anchor in Clerkenwell which takes first place, washed down with their gorgeous ale selection.

This was never going to be cheap,  Of course its posh calamari but, as with most everything from Jason at Pollen Street Social, its fantastic quality tempura octopus and beautifully presented and seasoned.  Whilst we’re in the genre, you might want to drop by Mishkins and feast on the Cod Cheek Popcorn which is also heavily seasoned with some green chilli shaved over for contrast.

Quite aside from the fact that this delicacy isn’t actually a snack, it is London’s favourite alcoholic accompaniment so it seemed only right that the ‘outside’ consumers got a mention whilst their inside counterparts snacked away.  We all know its bad for health, but one glance at the stats for the pork scratching and you may find yourself reaching for a packet of JPS yourself.

1. The Foie Gras Breville Toastie

And finally, the ultimate filling has been crimped into place, Mr Breville can’t possibly have imagined that it would end up like this. The Canton Arms in Stockwell have the best toastie in town, some believe this bar snack should really be in the Tate Modern. If you have problems with foie gras, either go for the haggis or try the Montgomery Cheddar and chutney fillings.
